Thanksgiving falls on Thursday, November 26 this year, and for a lot of families that is the start of six straight weeks of guests: in-laws in the spare room, a full table on the holiday, friends dropping by through New Year's. The cleaning is easier when you spread it out instead of trying to do everything the night before. This guide gives you a simple countdown (two weeks out, one week out, the day before, and the morning after) plus the spots guests actually notice. It works for any home, with a few extra notes for South Florida, where the holidays land right in the middle of snowbird season.
Why a timeline beats one big cleaning day
A deep clean and a guest-ready clean are not the same job. The deep work (inside the oven, grout, vents, baseboards) takes time and makes a mess of its own, so it belongs early. The surface work (bathrooms, floors, the guest bed) needs to happen close to arrival so it still looks fresh when people walk in. Splitting the two means you are not scrubbing the oven at midnight while the turkey thaws.
Two weeks before: the deep work
This is the part most people skip, and the part guests feel without knowing why. Do it, or book it, about two weeks out.
- Oven, inside and out. You will use it hard. Cleaning it now means no smoke alarm when the first dish goes in.
- Refrigerator. Empty it, toss what is expired, wipe the shelves and drawers. You need the room for holiday food anyway.
- Range hood filter and backsplash. Grease builds up over the year and shows up under bright kitchen lights.
- Ceiling fans, vents and light fixtures. Turning on a fan that has sat all summer drops dust on everything below it.
- Baseboards, door frames and switch plates. Small details, but guests see them at eye level from the couch.
- Grout and shower glass. Soap film and hard-water spots take scrubbing time you will not have later.
- Windows and sliding doors. Holiday light makes smudges obvious, especially on glass doors to a patio or lanai.
Our deep cleaning checklist lists every item room by room. If you would rather hand this part off, a deep clean two weeks before arrival is the most useful time to book one. Not sure which you need? Read deep clean vs. standard clean.
One week before: the guest spaces
- Guest room. Wash the bedding and the spare blankets that have been in a closet since last year. Dust the nightstands, clear a drawer and some closet space, and vacuum under the bed.
- Guest bathroom. Stock toilet paper, hand soap and clean towels. Check the shower for mildew in the corners and on the curtain.
- Coat and luggage spot. Clear the entry closet or pick a corner for bags and shoes so they do not end up all over the living room.
- Dining table and chairs. Wipe the chairs (including the legs), and wash any table linens or serving dishes that only come out once a year.
- Declutter the main rooms. Put away mail, toys and paperwork. Less on the surfaces makes everything faster to clean later in the week.
The day before: the visible reset
This is the clean everyone sees, so save it for last:
- Bathrooms scrubbed and disinfected, mirrors and fixtures shined.
- Kitchen counters, sink, stovetop and appliance fronts wiped.
- Floors vacuumed and mopped edge to edge, entry mats shaken out.
- Trash and recycling emptied, with empty bins ready for the big day.
- A quick dust of the living room and the guest room one more time.
Moving a few things out of the way first saves a lot of time, whether you clean yourself or have a team coming. Here is how to get your home ready before the cleaners arrive.
The morning after: the post-party reset
The day after a big meal usually means a sink full of roasting pans, sticky floors and a full trash can. Plan for it: run the dishwasher before bed, soak the pans, and get the trash out that night. If the house is full of guests and you would rather spend the time with them, a post-party cleaning visit can reset the kitchen, floors and bathrooms. That is part of our spring and holiday cleaning service.
South Florida holiday notes
Hosting in Miami, Fort Lauderdale, Coral Springs or elsewhere in Florida comes with a few extra jobs:
- Guest rooms closed up all summer. A room with the door shut through the humid months can smell musty. Air it out, wash everything in it, and check the AC vent and closet corners for mildew.
- Lanai, patio and pool area. Holiday guests in Florida eat outside. Sweep, wipe the outdoor furniture, and clean the glass doors on both sides.
- Sand and beach gear. If guests are heading to the beach, put a mat and a towel bin by the door so sand stays in one spot.
- Snowbirds opening the house. If you are coming back for the season and hosting soon after, start with our snowbird home opening checklist, then follow the timeline above.
- Holiday rentals. Renting your place to holiday visitors? Turnovers between guests are their own job. See Airbnb and vacation rental cleaning.
We also clean homes in Orlando, Tampa and across the country. In colder cities, add one thing to the list: a sturdy mat and a boot tray at the door, because wet shoes and road salt are the fastest way to undo clean floors.
If you have pets
Guests with allergies notice pet hair long before you do. Vacuum the furniture and under cushions, wash pet beds and throw blankets, and wipe nose prints off glass doors. We use organic, pet-safe products as our standard, so your pets can stay home while we clean. More on that on our pet-owner cleaning page.
Book early
Holiday dates fill up quickly. If you want help, ask for a quote as soon as you know when your guests arrive, and tell us the date. A good plan is a deep clean about two weeks before and a lighter reset the day before or the day of. Many families keep the reset going after the holidays with recurring cleaning.
Frequently asked questions
How far ahead should I deep clean before Thanksgiving?
About two weeks before is a good target. That leaves time for the heavy work (oven, grout, vents, baseboards) and keeps the last few days for the quick surface clean guests actually see.
Is a holiday clean the same as a deep clean?
They overlap. A holiday clean usually includes deep-clean items like baseboards, vents and fan blades, plus extras such as the inside of the oven or refrigerator. Tell us what matters most and we will quote the right scope.
Can you clean after the party too?
Yes. A post-party visit can reset the kitchen, floors and bathrooms after your guests leave.
How do I book a cleaning for a holiday date?
Ask for a free quote or call or text (346) 646-6189 as early as you can and tell us your date. We will confirm availability.
Are your products safe around kids and pets?
We use organic, pet-safe products as our standard. If anyone in your home has allergies or sensitivities, mention it when you book.
Do you work outside Florida?
Yes. Bethel J cleans homes across the United States. See our service areas.
